Week 12 #3

In Chapter 35, Kramarae concludes that " in order to participate in society women must transform their own models in terms of the recieved male system of expression." ( Griffin, E 2008) ( P 459). It`s a good idea to transform women`s own models to recieve male system expression. It can help women understand more men`s thinking; and women can find the best way to communicate with men. But, men have to transform their own models to recieve female system expression. Like men, women also have their own thinking that is different from men`s thinking. It can help men to find out why women have different explaination in the same things or ideas than men do. Also, men can have more sense about women`s thinking and emotion. It can help men make good relationship with women. If only women make change, and men have no change anything, it will create the different unequal between women and men.

I'm not convinced that women and men inherently think differently. Research thus far suggests that although women's and men's brains may have some differences, outcomes are essentially the same. The differences Kramarae is discussion are cultural--women and men are raised differently and responded to differently. But that is changing, as we've seen with Hilary Clinton's recent presidential campaign and the (small) gains women are making in other political venues, such as Congress. But as you point out, both women and men have to adapt to reduce the power differential between the two genders.

I also agree that women and men do not think inherently different. I think their communication and modeling which they recieved from the time they are born is what changes their style or mode of communication. If you can remember back, boys are always asked to participate in rough and tumble, G.I. Joe play, and girls are always asked to participate to play with barbies and dolls. I think the experiences that one undergoes truly does shape their communication style, and thus appears to be different, even though they started the same.

I think that men and women need to work together to understand where each are coming from in many aspects of life, politics, and the work place. I think that if both could try to understand eachother a lot more could be accomplished. I am currently take a race and gender history course and one of the books I am reading discusses civilization. The feminist view point suggusts that men need women to complete their being and should stand equally with them to help society to become highly civilized. I thought that that was an interesting view since we were reading a lot about the feminist view point of communication.
