Week 9 #2

In chapter 26, economic determinism is that " the belife that human behavior and relationships are ultimately caused by differencess in financial resources and the disparity in power that those gaps create." ( P 336). Who has the power, who controls over ideology and political power. The example of Iraqi war, at the beginning of the war, the government sold the idea of the war in TV to push people believe that created the war was the right idea and necessary responsibility. Later, the government encouraged people to support our military in Iraq. people who agreed the war and people who disagreed the war try to do any thing they can to support our military.Who has the power can change our culture and believe by using media

Our media is extremely powerful and is used as a tool by individuals and often the government (even though we are not the type of government/economy who controls the media) to make the viewers believe something, whether it is the wars with Iraq, information about the presidential candidates, the events surrounding September 11th, or almost anything else.

I have travelled a lot and I feel that the American media has a lot of power and influence over what Americans and the rest of the world think. When I was in Germany earlier this year, it seemed that the American media was stronger than the local media in the sense that even though we were across the world, people followed US politics and German programs were interrupted to give updates about our debates etc. The same is true of Canada, where I'm from. I can guarantee that the regular broadcasting will be interrupted on the day of the election to show election information in Canada even though it is about America.

Thus, the media is very powerful and is used as a tool to convey various messages....even if they want you to believe something that isn't true, they (the government) will use the media as a tool to sway what you believe.

In our country money certainly is equated with power. The more economic resources someone has the more influence they have over our country. I agree with you that the Iraq war was sold to the American people and it was a distraction from 9/11. The media has power to influence our politics and foreign policy, and in this case it had gained the approval of the U.S to invade Iraq. Even though there were many protests against the Iraq war few of them were televised, and even the ones that were aired had a very short time slot.
